The real cost of relocating: it's not just the moving truck

Most relocation cost calculators focus on housing and maybe taxes. They miss the costs that actually hit families hardest: childcare, elder care, and pet care. These three categories alone can swing your monthly budget by $3,000+ between states.

Infant daycare runs $650/month in Mississippi but $2,400 in DC. That $21,000/year gap per child dwarfs the difference most people expect. Elder care is worse: an in-home aide costs $3,813/month in Mississippi versus $6,864 in California or Alaska, a $36,600/year swing.

We built this calculator by pulling state-level cost data from four specialized databases across our portfolio. No other relocation tool covers this combination of categories, because most are built by real estate companies that only care about housing.

What this calculator covers (and doesn't)

This tool compares four cost categories that vary significantly by state: licensed infant daycare, elder care (in-home aide, assisted living, or adult day care), annual vet costs, and LLC formation fees. These are state-level averages from government surveys and official state filings.

We don't cover housing, taxes, transportation, or groceries here. Not because they don't matter, but because dozens of calculators already handle those. Nobody else aggregates childcare + elder care + pet care + business formation into one view. That's where family budgets actually get blindsided during a move.

States that save families the most

If you're optimizing for total family cost, Mississippi, Arkansas, Alabama, and Louisiana consistently rank cheapest across all four categories. The tradeoff: these states also have lower average wages and fewer childcare providers per capita.

The most expensive states (California, Massachusetts, New York, DC, Alaska) cost 2-3x more for childcare and elder care. Vet costs run 25-40% higher. LLC filing fees vary wildly: Massachusetts charges $500 while Kentucky charges $40. That's not a typo.
