How Small Business Grants Work

Grants vs. loans

Grants are free money — no repayment, no equity. Loans must be paid back with interest. Some programs are "forgivable loans" that convert to grants if you meet job creation or revenue targets over 2–5 years.

Who wins grants

Grant committees look for: demonstrated business plan, job creation potential, industry fit (rural, tech, minority-owned, etc.), and ability to leverage the grant with private funds. Revenue-matching requirements are common for state programs over $50K.

Application timelines

State programs often have quarterly or annual deadlines — miss the window and you wait 3–12 months. Federal SBIR has rolling deadlines by agency (NIH, NSF, DOD all have different cycles). Start applications 60–90 days before the deadline.

Realistic expectations

Acceptance rates for competitive grants are typically 5–20%. Apply to multiple programs simultaneously. SBDC counselors can review applications for free — use them. Women, minority, and veteran programs often have higher acceptance rates due to smaller applicant pools.
