How to Convert Salary to Hourly Rate
The Basic Formula
Converting an annual salary to an hourly rate is straightforward:
With standard 40-hour weeks and 52 weeks per year: Annual Salary ÷ 2,080 = Hourly Rate
For a $60,000 salary: $60,000 ÷ 2,080 = $28.85/hour
Accounting for Paid Time Off
Paid holidays and vacation days reduce your effective working hours. If you have 10 holidays and 10 vacation days (4 weeks total), your actual working time drops:
- Standard hours: 2,080/year
- Less 4 weeks PTO: −160 hours
- Effective working hours: 1,920/year
- Effective hourly rate on $60,000: $31.25/hour
This matters when comparing job offers — a position with 3 weeks PTO is worth more than one with 0 days, even at the same salary.
